Juhu is a suburb of Mumbai. It is famous for its sprawling beach, the Juhu Beach. It is surrounded by Arabian Sea in the west, Santacruz and Vile Parle in the east. Juhu is one of the more affluent areas of Mumbai. Many Bollywood stars own bungalows in Juhu, famously including Amitabh Bachchan, Amrish Puri, as well as the Deols and numerous other stars and starlets. Industrialist Adi Godrej, Musician Khayyam, Media Expert Niranjan Parihar and Chairman of Montex group Raman Jain also have their bungalows in Juhu. The nearest railway stations are Santacruz, Andheri and Vile Parle. History The open beaches of Juhu have attracted the well-heeled among Mumbai's population for almost a century. In the 1890s, Jamsetji Tata purchased land in Juhu and built a bungalow there. He planned to develop 1200 acres (5 km²) in Juhu Tara. This was to yield 500 plots of one acre (4,000 m²) each and a seaside resort. Simultaneously he wanted to extend the Mahim–Bandra causeway to Santacruz, in order to provide access to this area. The city turned down this plan in 1903. After his death in the same year, the scheme was abandoned. Juhu Beach Juhu Beach is the most famous beach in Mumbai city. It is situated on the shores of Arabian Sea in Juhu suburb. There are three main entrances to the beach. One is from the Vile Parle side, another is from the Santacruz side and the third one is from the Andheri side.
Many tourists make it a point to visit the beach when they come to Mumbai, as it is a relatively uncrowded free space in the city, although it does get crowded in the evenings and weekends. It is famous for its Mumbai 'street food', notably bhelpuri, pani puri, chaats, and of course pav bhaji. Due to the nature of the food stands hygiene standards are often low. On the southern end of Juhu beach there are many luxury hotels and apartments. At the north end of Juhu Beach there is a place called Gandhi Gram. When Mahatma Gandhi used to practice in the Bombay high court in the late 1800s and early 1900s, he used to live there. He mentions in his autobiography that he used to walk to Bandra station from far-flung Juhu to catch an empty train to south Mumbai. Even today, a lot of people do the same, but now the mode of transport is either a BEST bus or an auto rickshaw. Juhu Citizen Welfare Group JCWG officially registered in March 2004 is the outcome of many years of activism by some Juhu residents who have been associated with other NGO groups. It was formed in April 2002 (The Juhu Seatizen) and later formalised in August 2003 with its own monthly publication called: 'The Juhu Citizen'. It now comprises voluntary Members invited from NGOs in the K-West Municipal Ward of North West Mumbai who meet every Thursday evening at the Office of Janki Kutir Residents Association, Juhu Church Road, (near Prithvi Theater), Juhu, Mumbai 400 049. The huge industrial area at Tarapur accommodates various specialty chemical, bulk drugs, steel and alloy and textile manufacturing companies. Dahanu Thermal Power Station
Dahanu Thermal Power Station (DTPS) is Reliance Energy Ltd.’s single largest power generating facility. It is a 500 MW (2 X 250 MW) coal based thermal power station.
The power plant was commissioned in 1995. DTPS is the first power utility to get both ISO 9000 and ISO 14001 certificate in India. Electrostatic precipitators (ESP) are installed to collect fly ash and minimize emissions to the atmosphere. DTPS has installed a 275.34 m stack to ensure better dispersion of particulate matter. The stack has a diameter of 31.5 m at the bottom and a diameter of 16 m at the top, with two separate flues of 5.25 m diameter at the bottom and 4.75 m diameter at the top for each unit. A Profile of Ecologically Fragile Dahanu Taluka Modernity's perception of an "ecologically fragile" region quite often discounts the strain on the social fabric caused by the sustained notions of distributive justice. The language articulating the politics of conservation sometimes hides the ideas of social equality that it inadvertently compromises. These tendencies have thrown up seemingly complex contradictions, which are dominating the discourse over social ecology, development and ethnicity. Dahanu, a Western Indian town located on the margins of the neo liberal economic tide, is a microcosm of this phenomenon. The town dreams of an explosion of the money economy and yet it is not willing to give up its tranquil life style. It wants to embrace the consumerist world view but narrates stories of the ecological wisdom of the Warlis, a tribe that symbolizes the cultural milieu of the region. Situated a mere 120 kilometres north of the city of Mumbai, Dahanu taluka is today at crossroads - ecologically, socially, culturally. Surrounded by the rapidly advancing industrial and commercial metropolises of Mumbai and Vapi, it's communities struggle for survival, even as their space and natural resources remain heavily contested. Dahanu's population consists predominantly of the indigenous community of Warlis. The region also has a large fishing, farming, and traditional artisan community. Fun is had by all, especially the persons who partake in the event itself. Topographically, Dahanu taluka can be divided into a 10-12 kilometre wide bandarpatti, the coastal belt of lowlands and flats extending from the sea coast to the railway line situated at the foot of the Sahyadari range. The entire coastal belt with its rich natural resources, wetlands, mangroves and river deltas, forms a lucrative fishing area. The junglepatti, to the east of the railway line consists of tropical deciduous forests. Interestingly the forest cover in Dahanu is still fairly high at 45.2 percent. A large part of the indigenous community resides in this zone, in remote almost inaccessible villages. In spite of a rich tradition of resistance, the indigenous Warlis have today become poor marginal farmers or migrant labourers barely surviving from year to year. While their narratives and consciousness come from a history of police brutality, exploitation by landlords, moneylenders and liquor contractors and from their continuous struggle for land rights and access to the forests, they are today forced into practicing settled subsistence agriculture. Moreover, categorized as backward and primitive, their culture, heritage and ecological understanding has come under attack. They now live on the margins of industrial and urban areas on the fringes of their slowly eroding forest lands. Additionally, the coastal commons of Dahanu are also severely threatened. With the construction of a fossil fuel based thermal power station, Dahanu's environmentalists have had to relentlessly campaign to protect the destruction of natural resources and the marginalisation of communities through the alienation of their livelihood resource. Even though Dahanu has been declared an ecologically fragile area, the battle to restrict unplanned, haphazard and inequitable development continues The farming and orchard owning community in Dahanu also grapples with its own realities. With declining yields and reduced viability of the orchard economy the challenge facing the farmers is to be able to retain their tranquil way of life while yet redefining their sources of livelihood. The need of the hour is to demonstrate alternative and sustaining forms of development, that are economically and ecologically viable. In an attempt to safeguard the direct expropriation of natural resources, prevent environmental degradation and protect traditional livelihoods, several groups in Dahanu has been crusading relentlessly for over a decade. The growth of Virar is yet to be seen in full as the quadrupling of the railway line between Borivali and Virar has just taken place in 2007. The railways are still pleading the lack of sufficient number of rakes to take full advantage of the quadrupling. Another proposal which is hanging fire in the extension of the link road from Dahisar to Virar by using the old currently unused railway bridge over the Vasai Creek. Virar is endowed with an excellent beach which is around 6 km away - Arnala. Many worshippers offer their prayers to their beloved deity "Jivdani Mata", by visiting the Jivdani temple, situated atop a hill (having around 1375 steps).
